Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  What exactly does 3DTelemetry do?

A:  3DTelemetry logs GPS data from your drive and outputs the data into KML (Google Earth format).  3DTelemetry is also capable of importing NMEA log files from external GPS devices (GPS logging devices).  The application will also import OBDII data log files and display it on your generated map.  See the screenshot section for examples.

Q:  Is my OBDII software compatible with 3DTelemetry?

A:  Click here for a list of compatible OBDII software.  If your favorite software is not listed drop us a line so we can get working in it!

Q: Do I need an OBDII scanner to use 3DTelemetry?

A:  NO!  you dont need OBDII software/hardware to use 3DTelemetry.  Using the application by itself will create Google Maps with your driving route.  Best of all,  in this mode the software is free (even when the trial runs out).  To display OBDII data within the map you will need a scanner however.

Q: What OBDII software do you recommend?

A:  If we support the software,  we recommend it.  All of the software that is in our compatibility list has been thoroughly tested in our 996 Carrera 4 test car.

Q: What type of GPS device do I need for 3DTelemetry?

A:  First off, you can create map files two different ways.

Method 1:  3DTelemetry will record your route by attaching a NMEA compatible GPS.  Method 2: By importing an existing GPS log from an external GPS device.

For method 1 (most common setup):  Most commercial GPS devices on the market today will work with 3Dtelemetry.  When selecting a GPS device make sure it is NMEA compatible and it has an available Serial Emulation driver (virtual com port) if it is a USB or Bluetooth model.  Many of these devices are under 50USD for 1HZ devices and will be all you will ever need.  For racing applications, we recommend a GPS device that is 5HZ or better (these generally cost a little more).

For method 2, External GPS Data Logger: Any logger that creates a NMEA compatible log file will work.  This includes most loggers on the market today.  We even recently tested the application successfully with an external digital camera GPS logger like this one from Sony.

If you are unsure what to get or would like to know if your current GPS device will work feel free to contact us.

Q: I am getting an error "Invalid OBDII log format" using when importing a vehicle log from PCMSCAN OBDII software,  what gives?

A:  This error is due to an invalid file export.  Please follow these directions for exporting the vehicle data from PCMSCAN and try again.
